Dewatering & Thickening

Minnesota Industrial Customer

Facility: Industrial, Meat Processing Facility
Technology: PWTech Volute Dewatering Press, pilot model ES-201

In the October 2023, PWTech piloted the Volute Dewatering Press at the customer's facility which averages 2.5 MGD from their processing facility. Wastewater from the plant begins treatment from a wet-well that flows into a rotary screen. The wastewater then directly goes to a DAF system. Sludge from the DAF is sent to a belt filter press where 500 to 1000 lbs. of lime is added for every 2000 gallons of sludge. The cake from the belt press is sent to a landfill for disposal.

Main Objective:

  • The objective of the pilot was to demonstrate PWTech’s volute dewatering press’s ease of use, low maintenance, and dewatering performance.

Project Goals:

  • Overhaul the dewatering process.

  • Remove the requirement of lime dosing and increasing their dewatering performance.

The ICS Group worked with the industrial facility and PWTech to demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the Volute Dewatering Press with influent sludge solids varied from 7% to 10.9% with an average of 9.4% across all runs.

Wisconsin Industrial Customer

Facility: Industrial, Meat Processing Facility
Technology: PWTech Volute Dewatering Press, pilot model ES-201

In the Fall of 2023, PWTech piloted the Volute Dewatering Press at the customer's facility. The industrial facility has two plants that have similar treatment processes, except for the DAF sludge processing. The current belt press was producing 25.3% cake solids, but the press was reaching its life of operation and would need to be replaced in the future.

Main Objective:

  • Demonstrate PWTech Dewatering Press' ability to yield dry cake solids and meet the plants dewatering objectives of 35% cake solids and highest solids capture rate possible.

Project Goals:

  • Effective dewatering technology to exceed belt press cake solids results.

  • Customer requested technology that required less maintenance and manpower to operate, automation.

  • Lower polymer usage.

Wisconsin Dairy Treatment Facility

Facility: Industrial, Dairy Treatment Facility
Technology: PWTech Volute Dewatering Press, pilot model ES-201

In the Summer of 2023, PWTech piloted the Volute Dewatering Press at the customer's facility. The dairy facility processes approximately 0.55 MGD of wastewater from a nearby dairy products facility.

Main Objective:

  • The goal of the pilot study was to demonstrate the operation of the Volute Dewatering Press and optimize polymer usage while maximizing solids and solids capture rates.

The Problem:

  • The facilities plate press system has longstanding maintenance issues and long repair downtimes.

  • Customer needs a more consistent and effective
replacement for their plate press so they are less reliant on the DAF thickener and reduce sludge hauling costs.

Wisconsin Municipal Wastewater Treatment

Facility: Municipal, Wastewater Treatment Facility
Technology: PWTech Volute Dewatering Press, pilot model ES-201

In the Summer of 2023, PWTech piloted the Volute Dewatering Press at the customer's facility. The municipality processes approximately 0.25 MGD of local municipal wastewater, as well as septic waste delivered via haulers.

Main Objective:

  • The goal of the pilot study was to demonstrate the operation of the Volute Dewatering Press, low maintenance, and dewatering performance

The Problem:

  • The facility wants to replace their belt press, which has increased maintenance costs and lower than desired dewatering performance (yielding 15% cake) with blended digested DAF sludge.

The ICS Group worked with the facility and PWTech to produce 17 runs during the week, 16 runs with the plant’s aerobically digested sludge with one run attempted with blended DAF and digested sludge.
